AMICAL 2026
Travel & transport
Sharjah is very closely connected to Dubai through the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area, with commuter traffic often creating very heavy traffic on main roads during peak times.
Major Airports
There are two airports conveniently situated for travel to Sharjah. Airfares vary depending on the airport chosen, so do check both to ensure you get the most appropriate option.
- Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) is a 10 minute drive away from the American University of Sharjah and the conference hotel, and various carriers including Air Arabia operate from here with a good regional network. This is the recommended airport for this event. Good wifi is available in the airport. Upon arrival, Ubers and taxis are readily available (Sharjah taxis have metered rates). Shuttle buses to the conference hotel will be running every 60 minutes.
- Dubai International Airport (DXB) is a 20-25 minute drive away from the American University of Sharjah (during rush hour this can extend to 1+ hours), and a large number of international airlines operate here. Good wifi is available in the airport. Upon arrival, Ubers and taxis are readily available (Dubai taxis are heavily regulated with metered rates and clean, comfortable vehicles).
Getting around the UAE
Shuttle buses between the conference hotel and the AUS campus will be available each day. Departure times will be advised.
Whilst the Al Jada neighborhood (location of the conference hotel) is very walkable, pedestrian access elsewhere is often limited and not recommended, particularly alongside busy roads. Public transportation is limited.
Taxis are available at most locations and accept cash and card payments. The following apps can be used:
- Uber: Available in all emirates and offers regular taxis and comfortable options. Payments via card or Apple Pay.
- Careem: Integrates with Dubai’s Hala Taxis, offering options like larger Hala Max vehicles and electric Hala EVs.
- RTA Sharjah App: The official app for Sharjah’s transport authority, offering taxi booking for metered taxis. Alternatively call 600 525252.
Self-driving delegates
